As a young man, Lord Axton Bealman was an over-privileged, overbearing, overly charming rake.  The years, however, are not kind to him, especially as karma has a way of ensuring what goes around, comes around.  Axton could have never foreseen the physical and emotional damage his soul would suffer these last seven years.  But none know better than him the grief and sorrow he now bears is all he deserves... and more.

The day Axton had so nonchalantly claimed 16-year-old Iona's virginity is also the day Iona's life spiraled into a black, bottomless abyss.  From the young, carefree life of an aristocratic maid, to that of a woman struggling to merely stay alive, Iona's only blessing is her young son, Theo.  Desperate to ensure their continued survival, Iona obtains a position in Lord Axton's employ as the nanny to his daughter.  After waiting seven torturous years, a long dreamed vengeance is finally at hand.  But how long before karma rears its ugly head towards Iona?

AXTON is a charming, albeit fast-paced, journey of hardship, self-realization and forgiveness, for both the hero and heroine.  Despite the fact that Axton exudes passion and caters to his lascivious appetites, he's incredibly indifferent, as most evidenced by his despicable treatment of Iona (both in the past and present).  He's a rogue, in the most sordid sense of the word.  And without a doubt in support of Iona, the reader will enjoy the fact that Axton has spent the last few years in complete and utter misery.  But those feelings of vengeful satisfaction are short-lived because Ms. Margret does a nice job of reversing our sympathy, especially after the reader learns of all Axton has had to endure.

Overall, though, nothing compares to the hardships Iona has been forced to bear.  For certain, it is her own naïveté that contributed to the cascade of bad luck that befalls her family, but by no means did their troubles begin because of her.  Having a gambling addicted father kick-started things well and good on its own.  Still, Iona's fortitude and inner metal sees her through each episodic event of her life, with her young son’s endless optimism giving her the will to forge on.  The sweetness of their relationship, and the love, trust, and understanding between them is heartwarming.

The road from hatred and distrust, between Axton and Iona, towards one of sympathy and forgiveness is a torturously turbulent one.  At times, I found Axton a bit lacking, his mistrust being his biggest obstacle in allowing others into his heart.  But there's a calm satisfaction to be had in the fact that Iona and Axton ultimately find peace in the end.

AXTON is a haunting, quick read.
