Pearl, Colorado 1868

Margaret Redde has made the long journey from Connecticut to Pearl, Colorado expecting to marry and finally have a home.  Over the past year she’s been corresponding with a man she believes to be Ethan Carver, but upon arriving at his ranch she discovers that the man she’s come to know and care for has never even heard of her.

Ethan Carver isn’t thrilled to discover that instead of the livestock feed  he’s expecting there’s a woman claiming that he promised to marry her.  It doesn’t matter that he finds her attractive, he won’t subject himself to feelings for a woman whom he’s sure will not truly want to remain in Pearl.  After all his own mother hated it there.  He just hadn’t counted on his brother’s well meaning interference.

Margaret’s dreams of finally having a home and a family seem to be falling apart around her.  Ethan won’t even consider marriage, instead he takes her back to town and dumps her on the sidewalk.  After talking with the general store manager  Margaret figures out that she’d been exchanging letters with Ethan’s brother, James, but that doesn’t explain why he’d set her up for such rejection and humiliation.  It isn’t until she becomes privy to the discussion going on inside the bank that the reasons behind James deception are revealed.  Having no passage back to Connecticut, Margaret will have to remain living on Ethan’s ranch for a year if she wants to ‘inherit’ the jewelry and funds James left for her.  Since it’s out of the question to live there without benefit of marriage, Ethan agrees to marry her, besides, it will allow him access to her delectable body for a year.  Ethan’s convinced there’s no way she could possibly wish to stay in Pearl, he’ll take what he can get but could he be wrong about her stamina and determination?

Mail order brides and the women who bravely leave everything they know behind for the possibility of love, home, happiness with a stranger have always fascinated me.  Emily Ryan-Davis gives readers an interesting tale with ALL THE TREES IN PEARL.  Ethan and Margaret make a wonderful couple - even if Ethan isn’t willing to give her a chance at first.  I was fascinated by James’s part in Ethan and Margaret’s relationship even though we never actually meet him in the story.
