Julian and Annabelle are newlyweds in an arranged marriage. They’ve been married for months but have only “known” each other twice. Why is this? The question keeps both of them awake night after night. Annabelle feels like a failure. Granted, she and Julian only met just before the wedding, but aren’t men supposed to find women alluring even if they don’t know them well? And as a woman, shouldn’t she be able to make her husband want her? Surely married people make love more than twice in six months!

Julian is swamped with insecurities. Yes, he managed to fulfill his duties on their wedding night and one other time, but he simply isn’t driven to lustful desires when he’s in bed with his wife. Instead, Julian harbors a secret and a secret desire. No one knows, but when he was in school, he had a close but unconsummated relationship with another boy. Memories of those feelings plague Julian. Does he not want his wife because he wants a man? Oh, he hopes not!

Unfortunately for poor Julian, Annabelle is so unhappy she blurts out their secret under prodding from Julian’s parents. Shocked—and perhaps fearful they’ll never have grandchildren at this rate—Julian’s father gives the young people invitations to a ball given by a viscount at a country estate.

It’s at the estate that things finally heat up for hapless Julian and heartsick Annabelle. The viscount and his wife—Vincent and Sabrina—have…an unusual marriage. They’re aware of Julian’s and Annabelle’s problem and they’re ready and willing to help. At first the younger couple doesn’t know what to think, but soon they’re in the swing of things. The question is, will a couple nights free from society’s strictures be enough to save a marriage?

What a romp! A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DELIGHTS (Kelli Wilkins) is a delight in itself! I really felt for poor Julian and loved how he “rose” to finding the solution to his predicament. And Annabelle proved to be an apt pupil for her lessons. They are endearing characters with a real problem and a rather thrilling, fun answer. Good writing and lots of action make this a book to recommend!

There is one question I would have asked if I’d been Julian, however. How did Julian’s father know about the viscount’s ball, hmm? Ms. Wilkins, might there be a prequel here?
