This book contains three stories about three friends who meet once a month at a bookstore to discuss books.  This month’s book for the book club is Charles Dickens’ book, A Christmas Carol.  Their angels, all apprentices, have until the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve to unite them with their One True Love to get their angel wings.  If they don’t succeed, they will have to wait a century before getting another chance to earn their wings. The angels, inspired by the book, decide to become the angels of the past, present and future to help their cause.

YESTERDAY’S BRIDE by Betina Krahn

Orphan Clare Halliday had been taken in by the Mayhews.  She had been betrothed to their son, Stephen, who died four years ago, a week before their Christmas wedding.  Every year at Christmas, they mourned all over again for their son, giving Clare empathy for Scrooge. But this year is different.  Cousin Ralph is returning home from India and giving them hopes of having someone to continue the Mayhew family business.

Seeing Clare, Ralph, whose real name is Rafe, though the Mayhews insist on calling him Ralph, understands why Stephen had always been eager to return home for the holidays.  Bemused by his elderly cousins, he finds himself charmed and falling in love with Stephen’s almost bride.  The plight of the slaves being used in India by the company he worked for was the reason he quit the company and returned home to England. Can he get Clare to return his love?

Mischievous angel Periwinkle, anxious to get her angel wings by uniting Clare with her One True Love, takes matters into her own hands, unaware that Clare sometimes sees the blue sparkles that she leaves behind while tampering with events.

TODAY’S LONGING by Jacquie D’Alessandro

Lady Adelaide ‘Addie’ Kendall took over her mother’s role with her younger siblings; her brother James and her sister Grace, after the death of their mother. She was always there for them, even missing her coming out. But she was not interested in meeting men.  She has been in love with Sebastian since he kissed her when she was twelve-years-old.

Sebastian has also loved Addie since their first kiss. So he was upset when his father informed him that he was to unite their families by marrying Grace, who was like a sister to him.  But he has seen his brother Evan around Addie and felt sure Evan would ask her to marry him.  Sebastian could not stand in the way of his brother’s happiness. Spending time around Addie for the holidays was driving him crazy and lately, he has noticed pink sparkles around her a lot. Although he does not see a happy ending to his love life, he cannot bring himself to marry Grace and knows he will have to inform his father before the holidays are over.

Apprentice angel Rose is desperate to get Sebastian and Addie together. She knows they are each other’s One True Love, and she cannot bear waiting another century without her wings. Frantic, she reminds Addie that ‘the woman that deliberates is lost.’  But will the reminder help unite the two would-be lovers?

TOMORROW’S DESTINY by Hope Tarr

Although she does not let her two friends know, bookshop proprietress Fiona MacPherson is about to lose her business and Christmas Day is her birthday. She will be thirty and, officially, a spinster. Fiona lost her father just a month ago. A tall redhead, she is self-conscious about her mismatched eyes, one blue and one green. However, this trait may prove to be beneficial for her.  Five years ago, on her way to an estate auction with her father, Fiona fell on an icy train platform, ending her trip and leaving her with a fear of crowds and a limp from a badly injured leg. Unbeknownst to Fiona, had she attended the estate auction, she would met her One True Love then.

Tobias Templeton rarely ventures out during the day.  With his pale skin, white blonde hair and opaque eyes, not only do people stare at him, but his eyes are very sensitive to sunlight. According to doctors, there is no cure for his condition.  He also fears there may be a problem with his mind.  Since boyhood, he has had the sense that he is half of a whole and that a part of him is missing.  He has had a recurring dream of a tall, red headed woman, dressed in white with mismatched eyes, one blue and one green…his ghost girl, as he thinks of her. Believing a certain book by Aristotle is the cure for his ailment, he has been trying to obtain it. Fiona’s father, who owned the book, refused to part with it.  Finally, as her father lay dying, he agreed to sell the book, but only if Tobias buys the bookstore, as well.  Will the book lead him to a cure or to his One True Love?

Angel apprentice Fern feels doubly responsible for Fiona; not only must she unite her with her one true love, but Fern blames herself for the accident. Sprinkling turquoise sparkles wherever she goes, Fern takes Fiona on a trip, allowing her to see what her future may hold in store, unless she makes some changes.

A HARLEQUIN CHRISTMAS CAROL, a wonderfully witty anthology of historical romances, is sure to put you in the holiday spirit. In this novel, three very talented authors each put their own spin on Charles Dickens’ story, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, using mischievous angels, instead of ghosts. Beautifully enhanced with humor, delightfully romantic plots, enchanting characters, true love, magic and angels, this book is a winner, not only for the holidays, but all year long. These stories are brought to life right before your eyes by these phenomenal authors, each injecting her story with love, laughter and magic, making it hard to put this book down until the very last page is read. I highly recommend A HARLEQUIN’S CHRISTMAS CAROL, and I look forward to reading more works by these authors.
