Brynn Cassidy is a school teacher in one of the tough sections of New York. She has the three angels Shirley, Goodness and Mercy assigned to her. Brynn's students are from the poorer sections of New York, but their troubles test Brynn's faith to the foundations. When her car breaks down, she meets mechanic Roberto Alcantara, the brother to one of her students. Not only is he good at fixing her car, he also steals her heart. Roberto knows that this is not the place for Brynn to live and work. He tries to convince her to leave, even refuses to see her, but she's determined to stay. It takes the death of one of her students to send her into submitting her resignation.

Hannah Morganstern works at her parent's deli. Hanna is destined to marry Carl Rabinsky, a man she does not love. They have little in common, but because their parents are anxious for them to marry they have little choice. Or so Hannah thinks. The angel, Goodness is assigned to help Hannah decide between two men. While attending the Thanksgiving Day parade, Hannah and Carl are having different opinions. Carl wants to go home, but Hannah prefers to stay. They become separated. Hannah meets prestigious lawyer Joshua Shadduck. She has seen him before, when delivering deli sandwiches to his law firm. She keeps her friendship with Joshua silent from her parents and Carl, but the more she secretly meets with Joshua, the harder her silence becomes. Hannah tries to break off her engagement with Carl, but every time she starts to tell him, something comes up. When Joshua comes into the deli for his meal, Hannah's father tells him that Hannah is engaged with the wedding date set. Joshua storms out. Hannah is left with the decision of continuing with the wedding arrangements, or standing up for herself and ending the engagement so she can marry Joshua.

Jenny Lancaster, formerly from Custer, Montana, moved to New York to peruse her dream of being a Broadway star. But instead of singing on Broadway, she sings and waits tables at a diner. Gabriel assigns Mercy to assist Jenny in making a decision. Jenny is lying to her parents about her success on Broadway. She wants to go home, but can't because of this. Trey LaRue's prayers are for Jenny to come home for the holidays, but when she refuses, he makes the trip to New York. He discovers that she is not as famous as she led everyone back home to believe. Trey had always loved Jenny, and he tries to convince her to come home. He proposes to her, but before she can answer, a call comes through telling her that her dream of Broadway is coming true. In her excitement over the news, she doesn't give Trey an answer. He leaves thinking that she chose Broadway over him.

As you read the stories in the book Touched by Angels, you'll be wondering if Brynn and Roberto come back together or does he allow her to leave? Will Hannah break off her engagement to Carl so she can marry Joshua or is she stuck in this loveless engagement? And as for Jenny. Will she take her big chance of becoming a Broadway star, or will she go home for Christmas to marry Trey?

Debbie Macomber weaves three separate stories into one exciting book. Although she touches on real life issues, she doesn't sugarcoat them. You'll laugh and you'll cry as you read Touched by Angels. It will build up your faith, as you discover that angels are at work in all our lives, no matter what we're going through.
