I’m admittedly a sap when it comes to books that center on past loves finding their way back to one another. It’s probably a cliché, but what can you do except cheer them on? All of us harbor some feelings for the previous loves of our lives, and secretly we hope to find them again one day. In this installment of Ms. Scott’s Last Thing series, we get just that.

Gabe Matheson is a professional quarterback on the mend. He needs to put himself out there, and if appearing on a dating game will get him the opportunity as well as a donation for his favorite charity, he’s game. What Gabe didn’t count on was choosing the one bachelorette who had gotten away once before.

Tory Sinclair is the owner of Hair You Are, a hair salon in Pittsburgh. She volunteers to help her friend Callie with a dating show that is being held at the bar he manages. When one of the girls backs out of the show, it’s Tory to the rescue. Still recovering from a recent breakup, she takes a chance; only this time she gets more than she bargained for.

Gabe and Tory reconnect through the game show, and are forced to face a past they never resolved and hopefully find a future together.

Gabe is confident and caring, while still being fallible and real. He is a man’s man, but is willing to admit his shortcomings and is more down to earth than you would expect for a pro footballer. He works hard to get to the bottom of why Tory left all those years ago. He makes mistakes, but they make him all the more endearing and real to the reader.

Tory is independent and strong, but she still has vulnerabilities that balance her as a heroine. She is a bit clumsy and awkward, but those shortcomings only made me relate to her that much more. She has a big secret, one that hurt Gabe in the past, but she’s suffered for it as well. She is open to love and while she wants to trust Gabe she does at times question his motives.

Secondary characters that I find I want to know more about surround them both in this book. Gabe’s teammates, Batch and Reed, seem to mean well, and at one point they do go to extreme lengths to help their buddy out. Reading about them and their escapades had me laughing out loud. Grace’s story was told in the first book of this series, but Callie definitely needs her story told as well. I’m hoping that some, if not all of them, get stories of their own very soon.

With her usual witty style and fresh approach to romance, Ms. Scott delivers another humorous offering. Ms. Scott’s voice and humor come through on the pages and have me anxiously waiting for more from her in the future.
