Hallie McCabe, a Navy journalist in the Public Affairs office, is scheduled for deployment aboard the Blanchard. Joining the Navy has given her a chance to finish college as well as provide her with on-the-job training as a news journalist. While on a break before leaving for the mission taking her into the Persian Gulf, Hallie meets a handsome gentleman, who offers to take her sailing. After discovering that he is an officer on the Blanchard, she decides not to see him after that day. But she finds herself falling for him and knows if she tells him she is in the Navy and on the same ship, he will walk away. After all, fraternization between the enlisted and the officers is strictly forbidden. Any violation could subject the senior member to disciplinary action. Wanting to spend more time with him, she puts off telling him. As the day of departure becomes imminent as well as the arrival of his parents to see him off, Hallie finds she cannot get the words out. So she breaks up with him, figuring with so many aboard ship, she can avoid him.

But once aboard the ship, which carries five thousand service men and women, she discovers that she will not be able to lose herself among the other sailors because her new assignment will be broadcasting the news on ship and very much in the public eye. So she writes him a letter, explaining why she broke up with him. But before he gets a chance to read it, he sees her reporting the news.

Phillip Johnston, Auxiliary Officer, is in charge of the engineering aboard the ship. Meeting Hallie is a dream- come-true. He knows she is the one for him and is ecstatic as they draw closer together, planning to introduce her to his parents when they arrive to see him off. Even his subordinates notice the chance in him. But then she breaks up with him just as he has to deploy and he does not understand why. When he suddenly sees her on the news, he is angry, believing she deceived him. However, his love for her proves to be stronger than his anger. But he knows he should maintain his distance from her. As an officer, fraternizing with her could destroy his career, if they are found out. But will they be able to maintain their distance when a member of the crew, who has joined a group of terrorists’ and their devious plot, takes Hallie hostage? Will they lose their lives just as they have found each other?

Absolutely brilliant, FORGIVE AND FORGET, the first book in talented author Heather Ashby’s LOVE IN THE FLEET series, is a riveting contemporary romance. It only took reading a few pages before the storyline and the realistic characters blew me away. Drawing on the knowledge gained in her own life’s experiences, Ms. Ashby brings her story to vibrant life, drawing her readers into her story. It is hard to believe that this is her debut novel, but after reading this story, I quickly became a fan and have added Ms. Ashby to my list of must read authors.

Besides the romance developing between her two main characters, Ms. Ashby gives insight into the mind of her prime villain, allowing readers to see what makes him tick as he carries out his nefarious plans. A timely story, FORGIVE AND FORGET is one that today’s readers will not want to miss! It is for all of the reasons stated in this review and more that I make FORGIVE AND FORGET a Recommended Read! If you are looking for an unforgettable story, packed with romance, suspense, action, heat and humor, this is the book for you!
