Vicki Vanover (screen name Vicki V) is a journalist determined to write a story regarding Afghan women’s rights and how or even if the war will have any effect on them. She’s on her way to Afghanistan to hopefully talk with some of the women and see the conditions for herself. There’s just the little issue of being stuck at Kandahar Air Field which is more like being at home – complete with fast food restaurants - than in a country at war. She knows a bit about the conditions soldiers live in thanks to Groundpounder’s blogs but nothing could prepare her for reality.
As luck would have it while eating from one of the many fast food places Vicki recognizes the man who sits across from her to eat. Staff Sergeant Hawkins doesn’t want it known about the ads he was ordered to model for and so she’s easily able to blackmail the surly man into allowing her to accompany him to his base in the Kabul Province. She also suggests that she’d be willing to exchange ‘favors’. Hawkins can’t leave her open to any joe she might be willing to proposition so he brings her back to his base… where space is at a minimum and there isn’t a single female. Forced to room with three men, she immediately forms an attachment to Ryan and he’s definitely attracted to her. It isn’t until he catches her online that he puts two and two together and realizes that she’s the Vicki V whom he’s been exchanging innuendos with through his blog. They’re in a war zone and Ryan believes in living every moment to the fullest so he’s not about to deny either of them the mutual satisfaction of their lusts. However, when the very real danger of the area makes itself known Vicki has to wonder why she’d give her heart to a man in such a dangerous occupation?
Once again Cat Johnson thrills readers by allowing us to revisit the Task Force Zeta men along with the brave soldiers serving in Afghanistan. I think I took each and every one of these soldiers into my heart while I was reading this story. I was completely caught off guard by the bit of international news that Ms. Johnson infused into the storyline. You’ll have to pick up a copy to find out what I’m talking about, but I got to tell you it had me smiling at just how effortlessly it seemed to fit into the storyline. A PRINCE AMONG MEN is a beautiful addition to Ms. Johnson’s already successful RED, HOT, & BLUE storylines and a wonderful book just as a standalone – if you haven’t read the others. This is definitely a book I’ll be adding to the keeper shelf.
