Anna is tired of having men control her life.  Her father dominated her every decision and action when she was growing up, and then her husband Stefano, a bully and a cheater, basically ran her life until his death. Now a widow, Anna longs to escape with her two small children
and go someplace where she can just regroup.  She needs time to reflect on who she is and what she wants to do with her life. The first person that Anna thinks to turn to is her old childhood friend and first love, Jace Willow.  So, she packs up her children and heads to Canada where Jace has made a name for himself as the owner of a successful winery.  Unfortunately, Anna is not sure how Jace will handle the unexpected arrival of her and the children, since their history also includes a painful break-up and a heap of resentment.  She is hoping that Jace will put bad times aside and help a friend who desperately needs his support.

Jace would never turn away a friend in need, especially Anna.  Still, because of the turbulent history that they share, he has created an almost impenetrable wall around his heart as far as she is concerned.  He definitely doesn’t want to risk heartbreak at her hands again.  Nonetheless, that wall around his heart may not stand a chance against the woman he has never stopped loving and her two beautiful children.

BREATHE is a wonderfully engrossing story with a well-developed storyline.  The author takes great care in developing the characters of Anna and Jace.  As the reader, you can’t help but sympathize with Anna and her situation early on, when you learn about her domineering father and philandering, absentee husband.  You find yourself rooting for her to dig deep within herself and find the strength to stand on her own two feet.  She is an amazing character that evolves dramatically from a worn-down, humiliated woman, who has not made many decisions for herself up until this point, into a strong woman who has a fierce need to provide for herself and her children.

Jace’s character also undergoes a great deal of evolution in the story.  He goes from being a resentful, hurt man, who is warring with his feelings for Anna and her children, to someone that realizes exactly what he wants and is determined to get it this time.  At the beginning of the story, I kept finding myself thinking that Jace was not a very nice person, and I didn’t like the cold manner in which he was treating Anna and her children. But by the end of the story, I had a totally different opinion of him.

The ruling emotions of this book were forgiveness and timeless love.  The story succeeded in grabbing my interest from the beginning, and I found the scenes between Anna and Jace to be charged with feeling and sexual tension.  You just wanted them to quickly get over the bad times in the past and reach out to one another.  The author handled intimate moments between the two characters with wonderful style and sensuality, giving credence to the saying, “less is more.”

BREATHE is a great, romantic story that is guaranteed to pull at your heart strings.  It is rich in emotion, and it seems at times, that the author almost dares you not to fall in love with Anna, Jace and the children.  If you are a fan of contemporary romances with happy endings and enduring love, then this is the perfect book to curl up with.
