Darren James ‘DJ’ McKay comes from a wealthy family. His father wants him to work with the family like his three older brothers. Of Irish descent, he is dark and handsome, having no problem with the girls. His father insists that he major in agribusiness at college, but he has a musical talent, so he also takes a voice class. In his senior year, he was chosen out of the chorus to be the featured tenor. His mother was a stand-in on Broadway and encourages his interest in his singing unlike his father, who feels that his career is for sissies. However, DJ struggles to prove to his father that he is as good as his three older brothers.
At college, Eva and DJ are given the lead roles opposite each other in the class play, the musical Phantom of the Opera. DJ takes the contact between them during the play a little far and Eva does not put up a fuss, since it will enhance their performance. The two seem disdainful towards each until they share their first kiss in the play. Awestruck, they realize there is something worth pursuing in their secret attraction to each other. They help each other with their developing careers, with Eva helping DJ with the foreign languages he needs to know and DJ paying for their audition tapes. However, when DJ takes her and a few other friends with him to his home for a barbecue, his socialite mother warns the girl from the opposite side of the tracks from having any close relationship with her son, especially marriage. Eva assures her that her career comes first.
After college, Eva and DJ accept a job for a traveling opera in
Europe opposite each other, thankful they can be together while they perform. Traveling through
Europe together and performing, they fall deeper in love as they take in the sights. DJ cannot imagine his life without Eva, but she does not feel worthy of him, especially after having the talk with his mother. Still life and love is wonderful for them. However, at summer’s end, the play has run its course and they must find another stint, but the only ones they can get separate them. Will their love survive the long distance in addition to DJ’s mother’s opposition to the romance? Can their love withstand the brutally competitive world of opera? Can Eva and DJ have it all or will their love interfere with the careers they have dedicated their lives to?
A compelling read, BORN TO SING is a delightfully emotion-packed women’s fiction novel, which will tug at your heartstrings. This story begins just after Eva has performed her very last opera after twenty-five years of performing. She has been called home for an emergency, but while waiting for her transportation to go home, she in interviewed by a young reporter. Eva relates her life story to her, trying to keep herself composed in the process. DJ had a recent cancer scare and has had his memoirs published. During the interview, Eva recites some of his story from her autographed copy. Deliciously infused with an intriguing plot, complex and compelling characters, family conflict, the competitive world of opera, sacrifices and tender romance, this story is one you will want to read more than once. Readers will find themselves laughing at times and near tears at other as they follow DJ and Eva’s story. A beautiful love story, BORN TO SING is one you do not want to miss. This is the first story I have read by this amazing author but I look forward to reading more of her works.
